A Poem for This Day Before the Self-Inflicted Famine

from an acquaintance in my old hometown

I follow David Olivencia’s occasional comments about life on his blog Letters from a Postman. This one caught my attention on this day before Trump and his billionaires bring hunger to 44 million Americans. 3,000,000 in NY state and 2,940,000 in my new home state of Florida, just to mention a few of the 44,000,0000 Americans who will shortly be hungry.

I am sitting
I am sitting in my boujee coffee shop tapping away on my phone
drinking a plain coffee milk please
listening to the music drone on

across the street
a Salvation Army gives out food to those that show
there is no panic as they line up for the foods that a supermarket has deemed out of date out of code
breads almost stale
meats and canned goods and excess from a chain that sell excess as the normal
the line is long today and soon
it will be longer and longer than that still
because billionaires have decided they should do without because Argentina and Israel need our American charity first
because our interests are not their interests
we are a broken nation sold to the highest bidder
sold by people elected by the rich to support the rich

Columbia Kitchen in Hudson, NY, serves food to those who need it.
