A tale of almost $400
Our kitchen sink stopped draining the other day. My amateur snaking did nothing.

Today, a plumber arrived with a power snake and fixed the problem in 15 minutes. The bill came to $375. This reminded me of a rather startling indicator of the insecurities that many Americans face in life.
The Federal Reserve has conducted surveys of households on a wide range of topics for years. The Report on the Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households in 2022, released in May 2023, reported that 37% of American adults could not cover an unexpected $400 bill exclusively using cash, savings, or a credit card paid off at the next statement. This is just a sample of the numerous insecurities in housing, healthcare, food, jobs, debt, education, aging, retirement, and more that characterize life for most Americans. These are the intentional results of the laws and policies put in place over the last fifty years by the rich and corporations.
